"The Great Soviet Famine. 1926-1936" (in Romanian: ”Marea Foamete Sovietică, 1926-1936”), Vadim Guzun, North University Press, Baia Mare, 2011, reflects the political, economic and social situation in the USSR between 1926-1936 based on unpublished Romanian diplomatic documents and documents published from Soviet archives. This period marks the transformation of the agrarian Tsarist Empire into a totalitarian industrial one. The volume deals with the causes, character and consequences of one of the greatest tragedies of the 20th century, the man-made famine in the context of the Five-Year Plan, the mass collectivisation and accelerated industrialisation. The research brings new elements about the way the famine was used as a political instrument during the consolidation of the Soviet regime. Contents and Foreward also in English. 380 pages.
